Reports: de la Rosa signs for Sauber
A couple of news sources are reporting that Sauber have signed former Arrows and Jaguar racer Pedro de la Rosa. The Spaniard, who will be 39 in February, has vast experience of pounding round circuits in his role as McLaren test driver, which he has held since 2003, but his recent race experience is limited to appearances in silver machines in 2005 and 2006 deputising for the injured and then dismissed Juan Pablo Montoya. He hasn’t raced since Brazil 2006, the same last race as Michael Schumacher, so it’ll be interesting to see how he adapts.
This is another blow for Nick Heidfeld – having missed out on the Mercedes GP drive to Michael Schumacher, it seems he will now not be retained by his own team, with de la Rosa bringing his experience and rumoured Spanish sponsorship with him. The experienced German will thus now be pinning his hoped on the 2nd Renault drive, which is never a good place to be as the likes of Johnny Herbert, Jos Verstappen and Nelson Piquet Jr will testify
