Top 10 Drivers of the Decade

Just picking a straight top 10 from the whole decade is a bit flawed, since the tendency is to have a bias towards drivers and performances in more recent seasons – see Tony Dodgins’ recent top 10 for the decade on Autosport, in which he includes Kubica but not Coulthard and Barrichello. Thus, I have worked my top 10 out using a fairer method – by compiling top 10s for each of the 10 seasons of the 2000s, with 10 points going to the driver in 1st down to 1 for 10th, adding up the total score for each driver from all the years, and, to prevent bias towards the drivers that have been around long-term, divided by the number of seasons they participated in (a season being more than 5 races – so Kubica’s 2006 counts but not Villeneuve’s 2004)

Firstly, here are the top 10s for each year – these were compiled by looking at various stats and rankings made at the time, either by myself or other members on GF1 or by looking at the Atlas top 10s for each year:

Adding up and dividing all the points, the final standings are as follows:

1) Michael Schumacher – Ferrari – Avg: 9.43
2) Lewis Hamilton – McLaren – 8.67
3) Fernando Alonso – Minardi, Renault, McLaren – 6.63
4) Kimi Raikkonen – Sauber, McLaren, Ferrari – 6.22
5) Juan Pablo Montoya – Williams, McLaren – 6.17
6) Mika Hakkinen – McLaren – 5.50
7) Sebastian Vettel – BMW Sauber, Toro Rosso, Red Bull – 5.33
8) Rubens Barrichello – Ferrari, Honda, Brawn – 4.40
9) Mark Webber – Minardi, Jaguar, Williams, Red Bull – 4.13
10) Felipe Massa – Sauber, Ferrari – 3.57

No place for Button in the top 10, as you see – he comes in at 11, although he would’ve just edged Massa had I rated him a couple of places higher this year. But as far as I’m concerned, him not making it is fair, because I don’t believe that you should be rated in the top 5 drivers of the decade on the strength of half a season in a brilliant car. Another Brit that misses out is David Coulthard, who comes in at 13th – this will be down to the fact that he had a middling last couple of seasons at McLaren and a middling last couple of seasons at Red Bull. Kubica slots in between in 12th, Ralf Schumacher 14th, and Heidfeld completing the top 15. The lowest race winner is Kovalainen in 21st after not being ranked in the top 10 despite winning the Hungarian GP last year, proving how competitive that season was and how mediocre he is

But I’m sure this can be improved upon, so I’m launching a poll on GlobalF1 to find a definitive top 10 by asking members to list their top 10s for each year. That way, it will eliminate any bias I may have (and I’m not biased at all as you know). If you’re not a member there, you’re more than welcome to post your selections in below
