2010 F1 New Entries

A look back at the entry process for the 2010 F1 season, with a list of the teams that did or didn’t enter

Accepted Entries
US F1 Team (USA) – led by Peter Windsor and ex-Ligier designer Ken Anderson, been planned since 2006

Campos Meta 1 (ESP) – former Minardi driver’s team with backing from Meta Image

Manor Grand Prix (GBR) – F3 race-winning team allied with Wirth Research, designers of the Acura sports car

Lotus Racing (MAS) – Malaysian government-backed Gascoyne-led project built out of unsuccessful Litespeed bid

Confirmed Entry
Team Lotus/Litespeed (GBR) – entry by F3 team, led by former Lotus engineers, Johnny Herbert and Mike Gascoyne

Lola (GBR) – legendary sports car manufacturer and former F1 team; withdrew on June 17th

Prodrive (GBR) – one of the top teams in motorsport, run Aston Martin Racing, ran Subaru WRT

Team Superfund (AUT) – investment company with strong motorsport links, with Alex Wurz as team principal

March Racing Organisation (GBR) – entry by Andrew Fitton, owner of March name and Swindon Town FC; rejected

Epsilon Euskadi (ESP) – sports car and WSR team led by F1 veterans Villadelprat and Rinland

N.Technology (ITA) – ran Alfa Romeo and Honda touring car teams, run International Formula Master series; withdrew on June 19th

Brabham Grand Prix (GBR) – entry from Formtech, the firm that bought the assets of Super Aguri

Sky Sport Italia (ITA) – entry from Italian TV station; rejected

myF1dream.com (GBR) – entry from a website aiming for a fan-run team; rejected (unsurprisingly)

Stefan Grand Prix (SRB) – entry led by Zoran Stefanovic, who once attempted to enter F1 with the 97 Lolas…

Strong Rumour
iSport (GBR) – top GP2 team; possibly decided against entry

Weaker Rumour
Carlin Motorsport (GBR) – multi-series junior team that entered in 2006, rumoured here

Status Grand Prix (IRE) – team that runs A1 Team Ireland, consortium including ex-F1 driver Dave Kennedy

Penske (USA) – US megateam linked to bid with Wirth, unlikely as Wirth was working with Manor

Luczo Dragon Racing (USA) – IRL team owned by Jay Penske, son of Roger, and a multi-billionaire businessman, suggested here

Rahal Letterman Racing (USA) – IRL team owned by Bobby Rahal and David Letterman, suggested here

Denied
Ray Mallock Ltd (GBR) – major sports/touring car team, originally intended to enter but changed mind

Barwa Addax Team (ESP) – formerly Campos GP2 team, denied after rumours linked them to Campos’ F1 entry

The result
US F1 Team – dead, did not make it

Campos Meta 1 – struggled for budget; morphed into HRT F1 Team after takeover by shareholder

Manor Grand Prix – naming rights bought by Virgin and became Virgin Racing until Beardy Branson got bored and allowed Russian sportscar manufacturer Marussia to take over

Lotus Racing – made it to the grid initially without any name changes, buyouts or other major dramas; “won” the new team battle and yet still had to change to Caterham for 2012
