GP3 entry list revealed

The entry list for the 2010 GP3 Series, created by the organisers of GP2 as a level 3 junior series to run as an F1 support, was revealed today, with 10 top class teams securing slots to run 3 cars each. Only 3 of the teams were GP2 teams – Addax, ART Grand Prix and Arden, which will be known as MW Arden after a tie-up with Red Bull F1 ace Mark Webber – along with the mighty Carlin Motorsport outfit, IFM front-runners Jenzer, Irish team Status Grand Prix (best known for running A1 Team Ireland), former WSR champions Tech 1, and 3 teams that primarily run in F3 – Mucke, Hitech and F1 graduates Manor.

The inclusion of some of the biggest teams in junior motorsport will no doubt give the series a big boost. Cynics have previously regarded it as a superfluous series with doubts at some point as to whether it would go ahead. But high profile teams will hopefully attract the better young drivers, to whom the F1 support series role will be important in trying to catch the eyes of the F1 and GP2 team bosses. It’s certainly looking favourable compared to F2 – despite its good intentions, the idea of having no teams for a junior series is fundamentally flawed, and this year’s grid seemingly hasn’t been bubbling with talent as shown by Soucek’s dominant victory. IFM struggled to get a decent-sized grid, whilst the Euroseries 3000 has been suffering with the same problem. I don’t envisage small grids with GP3, even if the budget is bigger than other series – I think it could well end up being a formidable rival to Formula 3, in particular the national championships such as the British F3 championship, for which the push to become a more international series could backfire.

It’s going to be an interesting few years in the junior motor racing world.
